And somehow, despite having the wrong tools, materials, and no decent workspace, I managed to do it without cutting my hand off.

I find the constant sports ticker extremely distracting and it drives me nuts. Do we really need to know that a basketball game that will eventually end in a total of 200 points is now at 6-4? No, we don’t. In the past, I’ve taped up a big piece of cardboard across the bottom of the TV, but I didn’t want to go that route. So I took an extra piece of the toe kick left over from our kitchen remodel, and cut some notched blocks to hold it. It works great, it’s the perfect height, and it can easily be removed for non-sports TV. And best of all, it doesn’t block the remote sensor. Next step may be to paint it black.

I like it. I watch a lot of soccer, but not generally live, as I have a life to lead. So I record it all and watch it through the week. The fucking ticker requires that I watch the games in chronological order so as not to learn the score of a game I have yet to watch. It blows. I like your dedication.

I’ve been thinking of making this for a long time . Today, I finally got fed up. It took about 15 minutes, and I’ve been putting it off for years. I will often record one game while watching another at the same time, and it’s really hard not to see the score of the other game. The act of trying not to look makes me look. Or something. Anyway, problem solved.

I only watch Sumo and F1, I kind of wish Sky F1 would show a bi t more info on the side actually. But yeah those ticker things would be irritating.

I’ve been watching a lot of sports on ESPN+ reruns. Especially F1. I have to avoid BBC news on race days until I get to watch the race.

I blame Osama bin Laden. We never had constant news tickers until 9/11, and then they never went away.

Well the world keeps getting busier and trying to cram information into ever ything , first no cell phones, then some for rich people, then everyone has a phone. I remember having to go home and check messages. I don’t do any of the social media things.

I would think that the sports ticker could be turned into an option like closed captioning that you could turn on and off.

The sports ticker is a nice feature for a bar or other similar venue. There may be a local game on the TV, but some people want to know the scores for other games.

It doesn’t make as much sense for home viewers. If I want to know the score in a different game, I don’t want to wait 5 minutes for it to eventually show up. I can look it up on my phone much faster.

Love this. Such a great analog solution to a digital problem. We have so much un-wanted digital content that it has become impossible to navigate it at your own terms, and then you just put your foot down and said fuck the system. Somehow poetic. I dunno I’ve been watching too much Cyberpunk videos lately.

BTW p aint the whole thing in black to make it even less distracting...

In the days before smart phones and instant access to information, the occasional ticker is a great thing. I remember in the early days of ESPN they had the 28:58 Update, which was just that. A run through of the scores every half hour. But now, if I’m watching a game and want to know the score of another, I can find it on my phone faster than waiting for the ticker to cycle through.

Thanks. I’m planning on painting it, t hough right now, it kind of blends in with the natural pine veneer  of the TV stand, so it’s really not that distracting.

Love it. I watch sports on my schedule not theirs. Really get annoyed by the ticker sometimes. I’ve done this plenty of times with books or whatever, but yours is a million times nicer.

Now give me an audio feed without comments and just give me  the sounds of the game/match.....

In this digital era, there’s no reason why they couldn’t provide two feeds, one with commentary and one without. Although having the commentary makes it possible to listen and not watch.

Growing up my family would watch the cardinals games on the TV but preferred Jack Buck to call them so we’d watch with the TV on mute and the Radio on.

Pro tip : hook up a surround sound receiver, configure for whatever speakers including center but disconnect the center speaker (or don’t wire anything up to it).  This will work for many broadcasts.

So I’m sitting here watching a recorded game on the Fubo.tv streaming platform and the quality wa s terrible, which seemed odd, so I went into the settings and adjusted the video quality And there was a setting to turn off the streaming scores! Game changer.

Somehow I don’t think ESPN does that. But it’s worth looking into.

I’ll check later this afternoon. ESPN is broadcast on Fubo so maybe there is a game I can try with. The game I am currently watching is broadcast by NBC and it has no score updates.
